When Mark Ellis Met Steve Clark MLS Goalkeeper

Steve Clark / Portland Timbers

In the Summer of 2006 just 3 years before RIASA was established, Mark was in the US coaching with the Michigan Bucks ( now Flint City Bucks ) where he came across a young Goalkeeper called Steve Clark. Steve was talented and ambitious to move up from the level he was playing at.

He was also prepared to travel wherever he had to go in pursuit of his dream, and so on that basis Mark stayed in touch with Steve and in 2009 arranged for him to trial at Bradford City FC, which resulted in the club offering to sign him.

Unfortunately there were issues with work permits and so this offer was not to become a reality.  Still never to be deterred Mark utilised contacts he had in Norway and by 2010 Steve was playing for Honefoss BK where he went on to lead them to promotion out of the Adeccoligaen ( first division ) into the Tippeligaen ( Premier division).

In 2012 he was named player of the year and remained there until 2013 before returning to the US in 2014 to play in the MLS for Columbus Crew, DC United and in 2018 signed for The Portland Timbers.

Playing a crucial part

With a great career to date and still only 34 years old Steve has recently added yet another accolade to his Soccer CV, winning the MLS Back Save of the Tournament earlier this month.

This save was crucial to the tournament opening game win against LA Galaxy and went on to see the Timbers win the Championship trophy!
