The RIASA Sports Event Planning and Promotion Class students set out to organise a 6 A-Side Charity Football Tournament, as a practical element to their assignment with proceeds going to the Leeds United Foundation.
The Leeds United Foundation is a not for profit, grassroots sports charity, who help, work with and support: children, young people, adults, disabled at-risk, the unemployed and the elderly through football in and around the Leeds area.
As part of the research for this event, RIASA students visited a comparable charity event for a walking football tournament (pictured below). The afternoon allowed our students the opportunity to gain an insight into a similar type of event and of course gave rise for students to ask relevant questions, and test possible ideas and theories in a true sporting environment.
After benefitting from this research, RIASA students proceeded with their 6 A-side Charity Football Tournament. Students from the Leeds area were invited to compete in this tournament, with a small entry fee, with all proceeds going to charity, and a Cup and medals for the winning team.
The students also organised a Raffle to create some extra revenue, with the chance to win cash prizes as well as tickets to Leeds United – Elland Road, Championship game and some Leeds United Merchandise. After weeks of organisation and promotions, 3 pm on Wednesday 4th April saw the Tournament Kick off.
Despite horrific weather consisting of rain, and wind as well as a little sunshine, the enthusiastic spectators braved the English weather to cheer on their teams.
After much tension and excitement both on and off the pitch, “Team Peyton”(pictured below), went on to win the tournament, after a close final.
All participants thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and RIASA students managed to raise a total of £404.00. RIASA student-athletes took a trip to Elland Road to present Alan Scorfield – Chief Executive Officer with a cheque for the monies raised.
Jeremy McManus, RIASA Sophomore said “ I really enjoyed this class. It was great because we actually got to really achieve something that we were learning about”
The monies raised by RIASA students will go towards benefiting the Leeds United Foundation and will make a big contribution towards costs for pitch hire, and training equipment for Leeds Foundation Football teams, as well enabling school visits, and individual funding for disabled athletes, enabling the continuation of football opportunities for all connected with the Foundation.
A big thank you to everyone who supported the Sports Events Planning and Promotion class charity 6-a-side tournament on a very wet and windy Wednesday!
