The decision comes after Omar Damba, 22, scored a hat-trick in RIASA’s showcase game against Sheffield Wednesday’s academy, resulting in the club picking him up for a trial. Following his recent stint on trial with The Owls, the club made their final decision to take Omar Damba on an 18-month deal.
Making his mark during his time at RIASA against the likes of Burnley, Middlesbrough, and Bradford, Omar Damba is one of the academy’s leading goalscorers. Born in Spain and growing up in Bradford, Omar is a promising prospect with bags of talent at a young age.
During his stint at RIASA, Damba has been coached by ex-Sheffield Wednesday, Hibernian FC and Doncaster Rovers captain, Rob Jones. “Omar is a very likable character, a personality which exudes a confident and fun nature, mixed with an intense drive to accomplish his goals in football.” says Jones “The first time I saw him play, he stood out from the rest, my initial thoughts were that this boy is a footballer with a very bright future.”
Omar Damba was born in Gambia, raised in Spain and has resided in Bradford, West Yorkshire for most of his life. After becoming a Bradford College student at age 16, Omar played for the college team and made his mark as a dangerous goalscorer. However, it wasn’t until Kamran Stead (RIASA Assistant Head Academy Coach), took on a coaching position with Bradford College through RIASA’s partnership with the college, that Damba’s potential became blatantly obvious.
“The first time I saw Omar was at an open trial at Bradford College, and the first time I saw him strike a volley from 30 yards out, rattling the crossbar, was the moment I knew that he had something special.” says Kamran “
After bringing him into the RIASA Leeds Programme, Omar scored the vast majority of goals for Bradford RIASA in his first season with us and hasn’t looked back since. Continuing to score goals at that level both in the league and in showcase games against the likes of Burnley, Sheffield Wednesday, Middlesbrough and Bradford.”
Whilst the coaches, student-athletes, and staff will miss Damba’s presence at RIASA, we are truly proud to see him go onto play for Sheffield Wednesday and confident that he will go on to be a roaring success with the club. RIASA Head Academy Coach, Rob Jones, has this to say as Damba moves on:
“The sky is the limit for Omar. I believe that we have only scratched the surface of his potential. As time progresses in his new environment and his focus and drive remain the same, he will have a long and fruitful career ahead of him.”
