Middlesborough F.C. Academy vs. RIASA | Showcase day

Tuesday 14th November 2017 | Middlesborough F.C. showcase game

This week saw the opportunity for 18 RIASA student-athletes to travel to Middlesborough F.C.‘s incredible £7m training facility, Rockliffe Park, to take on the academy team. The trip was part of RIASA’s monthly showcase game initiative in which selected student-athletes are given the chance to play against professional football clubs’ academy or reserve teams. In order to reward hard work, great performances and commitment, the RIASA showcase team was a mixture of all age groups throughout the academy, including some freshmen who have made incredible progress throughout their short time with the academy!

The RIASA showcase team put on a great display, demonstrating to the coaches how much they have developed athletically since they have been with the academy. Unfortunately, the final score was 3-0 in favour of Middlesbrough F.C. However, after the game, Coach Jones remarked, “the final score was not at all a true representation of our performance.”. Despite the result, the coaching staff were very pleased and proud of the RIASA showcase teams’ performance and urged them to stay positive and learn from the experience. As seen in our matchday vlog, the players wound up looking at their performance in a favourable light and have taken many lessons from the game.

Following the game, the student-athletes were surprised with an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough F.C.’s state-of-the-art home ground. In addition to getting to witness the incredible view from pitchside, the student-athletes were also given a tour of Middlesbrough F.C.’s changing rooms, interview booths and the media area.

Overall, despite the defeat to Middlesborough F.C.’s academy team, it was an incredible day for the RIASA family.  The showcase team put in a great performance and the student-athletes were able to see the amazing facilities at Middlesborough!
